Are Foreign Dog Breeds Suitable for Our Homes? Understanding the Behavior of Local and Imported Dogs. Dogs are among the most loyal and affectionate domesticated animals known to humans. Their strong sense of loyalty makes them naturally protective of their owners; many dogs are willing to place themselves in danger when their owners are threatened. In many rural areas across Nigeria, local dogs are widely used for hunting various small and medium-size animals such as giant rats, rabbits, monitor lizards, duikers, and even monkeys. Their agility, intelligence, and familiarity with local terrain make them effective partners in traditional hunting practices. Over the years, however, the rising popularity of foreign or imported dog breeds—such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Mastiffs, and Dobermans has sparked important conversations. Although research consistently shows that these breeds are fully domesticated and not descended directly from wild animals, there have been reported cases where foreign breeds display aggressive or unpredictable behavior toward their owners. These incidents raise questions about their adaptability to our climate, living conditions, handling practices, and the level of training they receive. Interestingly, such aggressive incidents are less commonly reported among local Nigerian dog breeds. Local dogs tend to be well adapted to the environment, disease-resistant, and generally easy to manage. Their familiarity with local household settings and lifestyles may contribute to their stable behavior. This brings us to a critical question for families, farmers, and dog owners: Are foreign dog breeds truly suitable for home use in our environment? While many foreign breeds make excellent pets when properly trained, socialized, and cared for, their behavior often depends on: Quality of training, Proper handling and discipline, Adequate space and exercise, Environmental adaptation, Owner’s experience with managing strong or large breeds, In contrast, local breeds often require less intensive management and adapt more naturally to the conditions found in most Nigerian households and rural communities.
